Some commonly used terms associated with paint brushes. |
| Bristle |

Natural Bristle - Natural Chinese wild boar bristles. |

Nylon Filaments - A man made synthetic mono-filament. |
|
|
Polyester Filaments - A man made synthetic mono-filament. |

| Level & Tapered Filaments |
| |
|
|
Level filaments are any filaments that have the same diameter from one end to the other. |
|
Tapered filaments are any filaments that have a larger diameter at one end and tapers to a smaller diameter on the other. |

Flagging |
| |
|
The split ends at the tip of the filament. Synthetic filaments possess a man made flag, bristles a natural flag. |

| Tipping |
| |
|
The pointing of synthetic filaments. |
| |
| Ferrule |
| |
|
|
The metal band that the bristles are set into. Tin, Nickel or Brass are the common coatings. |

| Length Out - Trim |
| |
|
The length of the bristles measured from the edge of the ferrule to the tip of the bristles. |

| Trim |
| |
|
Flat trim -The top edge of the brush is cut into a flat or square edge. |
| |
Chisel trim -The top edge of the brush is cut into a dome shape. |

| Set |
| |
| |
The gluing of the fill material and the ferrule together with an epoxy resin. |

| Handles |
| |
|
Handles are made of either Wood, Plastic or Foam, and come in a variety of shapes. Shown below are a few of the most common styles. |
